San Jose Sharks Terminate 24-Year Old Defenceman's Contract
The San Jose Sharks are parting ways with defenceman Leon Gawanke, as reported by Chris Johnston of TSN. Gawanke, originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets, found himself on unconditional waivers for contract termination.
"Leon Gawanke has been placed on unconditional waivers by the #SJSharks and will have his contract terminated," Johnston confirmed.
At 24, Gawanke's journey has been one of frustration and missed opportunities. After spending four years with the Winnipeg Jets organization, he sought new horizons and signed with Adler Mannheim in the German DEL. However, his stint with the German team was short-lived, as he soon secured a contract with the San Jose Sharks.
Despite his efforts in the AHL, Gawanke never managed to break into the NHL lineup, mirroring his experience in Winnipeg.
With 27 points and 37 penalty minutes in the AHL, he now faces unrestricted free agency, potentially paving the way for a return to Germany for the remainder of the season, pending his clearance from unconditional waivers.
