Kasperi Kapanen, once a highly touted prospect, has faced significant struggles both on and off the ice.

Now with the St. Louis Blues, Kapanen is opening up about his personal battles, particularly his issues with alcohol, which led to a DUI arrest in Finland last offseason. In a candid interview, Kapanen revealed the depth of his struggles and how he used alcohol to cope with the pressures and anxieties of his high-profile life.

In an interview with Hockey Feed and Finnish news outlet Ilta Sanomat, Kapanen admitted that he didn't even tell his father about his substance issues:

"I didn't even dare to tell my father, because I knew he would be really disappointed," Kapanen said. "I think I told my mother and of course my girlfriend knew about it. I only told the others when the matter came out in September. It was such a big shame for me."

Kapanen explained that his drinking wasn't for celebration, but a way to handle the pressures of being an NHL player:

"At some point, there was more drinking that I didn't do it to celebrate, but because there was so much pressure, annoyance or anxiety during the season," Kapanen shared. "I tried to use alcohol to almost mask those feelings."

With his newfound openness about his struggles and the support of his family, friends, and teammates, Kapanen hopes to make a fresh start with the Blues. This season could mark a turning point in his career, allowing him to focus on his performance on the ice without the burden of his past struggles.

It's a brave step for Kapanen to share his story, and it highlights the importance of mental health and seeking help. With the right support, he aims to regain his footing and reach his full potential in the NHL.
