St. Louis Blues announce Torey Krug in danger of missing all of next season
Torey Krug Faces Uncertain Future as Potential Surgery Looms
St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug is facing a critical evaluation period that could determine whether he will miss the entire 2024-25 NHL season. The team announced that Krug, 33, has been diagnosed with pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle, a condition stemming from a previous broken ankle.
"Torey Krug has been diagnosed with pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle and will be re-evaluated in 6-8 weeks. If surgery is necessary, Krug would miss the entire 2024-25 season."
The Blues further explained that Krug will attempt to rehabilitate the injury through non-surgical means over the next two months. The success of these interventions will determine if he can avoid surgery.
"Krug will work to rehabilitate the injury through non-surgical interventions over the course of the next 6-8 weeks. After that time, he will be re-evaluated to determine whether surgery will be necessary. Krug is officially considered to be out indefinitely and if surgery is required, he will be unavailable for the entirety of the 2024-25 season."
Krug, who is in the fifth year of a seven-year, $45.5 million contract with an annual cap hit of $6.5 million, has been a key player for the Blues since signing as a free agent in 2020. Before joining St. Louis, he spent nine seasons with the Boston Bruins, where he established himself as one of the league's premier offensive defensemen.
Should Krug require surgery, the Blues will face a significant gap on their blue line. His absence would necessitate adjustments both on the ice and within the team's salary cap structure. The potential long-term loss of Krug underscores the unpredictability and physical demands of professional hockey, and highlights the resilience required of players facing such challenges.
Krug's next evaluation in 6-8 weeks will be a pivotal moment not just for him, but for the Blues' upcoming season. All eyes will be on his recovery process as fans and teammates alike hope for a positive outcome that allows Krug to return to the ice without needing surgery.
