Samuel Montembeault of the Montreal Canadiens got the start last night as they took on the Toronto Maple Leafs in their season opener.

For the most part, fans expected a big win from the Toronto Maple Leafs. After all, they improved in the offseason and have a roster to be proud of. However, in the end, it was the Habs who were victorious thanks to a 1-0 win in which Cole Caufield got the lone goal of the entire game.
The Leafs offense wasn't stagnant, however. They had 47 shots on goal and in any other normal match, they would have won. However, Montembeault stood on his head and made some truly beautiful saves that had Habs fans in awe. As it turns out, his big win proved to be a record-setting one.
He now has the most saves in a season-opening shutout in NHL history. Moreover, he broke the Maple Leafs' shutout-less streak. Toronto had gone over 250 games without being shutout. It was the third-longest streak in the entire history of the NHL, and it just goes to show how well Montembeault had to play to get the "blanchissage."
Now, the Leafs are going to have to regroup as they take on the New Jersey Devils tonight. Meanwhile, the Habs are on a bit of a high as they look to build upon their youth movement that could very well lead to them contending later on down the line.
