Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were tragically killed late last night near their childhood hometown of Salem, New Jersey.

According to reports, the two were on bicycles when they were struck by a motorist. The incident took place at around 8:30 PM and was confirmed this morning by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Overall, this is truly shocking news, and the circumstances around their death are all the more heartbreaking. The brothers were set to attend their sister's wedding this weekend. In fact, Katie Gaudreau had her wedding rehearsal on the same day the Gaudreaus lost their lives.
In a statement, the Blue Jackets wrote about Gaudreaus hockey career and how much he meant to the people around him. From Boston College to the Calgary Flames, Gaudreau was a truly dynamic force who transcended the game. Matthew was also a talented hockey player who was beloved by his teammates in both the AHL and ECHL.
"Johnny played the game with great joy which was felt by everyone that saw him on the ice. He brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets. He thrilled fans in a way only Johnny Hockey could. The impact he had on our organization and our sport was profound, but pales in comparison to the indelible impression he made on everyone who knew him. Johnny embraced our community when he arrived two years ago, and Columbus welcomed him with open arms. We will miss him terribly and do everything that we can to support his family and each other through this tragedy."

Following the tragic confirmation, the entire hockey world went on Twitter to pay their respects. As you can see, Gaudreau was truly beloved. No one had a single bad thing to say about him, or his brother. It just goes to show that these two young men were respected and deserved a long life full of joy.
More details surrounding this tragic incident will be made available over the coming hours and perhaps even days. We will be sure to bring you those updates in both a timely and respectful manner.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gaudreau family and the entire hockey world during this devastating time. It is impossible to fathom what everyone must be going through at this moment. The Gaudreaus were great men and there is no doubt that their legacies will live on.
