Driver arrested and charged with the deaths of Johnny Gaudreau & Matthew Gaudreau
It was confirmed this morning that Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau were killed near their hometown of Salem, New Jersey, late last night.
Rumors began swirling concerning their deaths after it was revealed that two cyclists had been hit by a motorist 10 minutes from where they lived. At the time, many speculated that the Gaudreaus were the victims. However, many remained skeptical. Unfortunately, the news was made official, and now, new details are beginning to emerge.
Mike Greenberg of ESPN's Get Up revealed that the motorist who allegedly struck the two brothers was arrested and charged with two counts of driving under the influence and death by auto.
The Blue Jackets put out a statement about Gaudreau's passing this morning. It was a devastating statement that speaks to just how much these two young hockey stars were beloved by their teammates and families.
"Johnny played the game with great joy which was felt by everyone that saw him on the ice. He brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets. He thrilled fans in a way only Johnny Hockey could. The impact he had on our organization and our sport was profound, but pales in comparison to the indelible impression he made on everyone who knew him. Johnny embraced our community when he arrived two years ago, and Columbus welcomed him with open arms. We will miss him terribly and do everything that we can to support his family and each other through this tragedy."
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gaudreau family during this devastating time. We hope that everyone who is affected gets the help they need from their community.
