J.S. Giguere Criticizes Connor McDavid's Decision to Skip Conn Smythe Presentation

Former NHL goaltender J.S. Giguere recently expressed his disappointment that Connor McDavid did not accept the Conn Smythe Trophy after the Edmonton Oilers' Game 7 loss to the Florida Panthers. Speaking on the 'Leafs Morning Take' podcast, Giguere, who faced a similar situation in 2003, emphasized the importance of showing respect for the game by accepting the award, even in defeat.

"I feel for Connor you know. He played so well and deserved that trophy. In my mind, I do think that he should have gone and accepted the trophy. At the end of the day, I think the game is always bigger than the individual, you know and this is a major trophy for the NHL," Giguere said.

He added, "It's something, you know, it would have showed kids I guess that winning or losing, you still present yourself the right away and accept your fate. Easier said than done, I get it, you know I think he's an amazing player, he's an amazing ambassador for the game. So, it's hard to imagine what was going through his mind. I know what it was like. I still would have taken the picture and leave, but it's not easy for sure. You know, it would have shown great respect to the game to just show up and take the picture. That's my personal opinion. I could be wrong."

Giguere himself accepted the Conn Smythe Trophy under similar circumstances. In 2003, after the New Jersey Devils defeated the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, Giguere, despite the loss, went back onto the ice to receive the trophy and take a picture with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

Connor McDavid's decision not to return to the ice for the Conn Smythe presentation is understandable given the emotional toll of losing a critical game. His frustration and disappointment were evident, and his focus was likely on the missed opportunity to win the Stanley Cup during his tenure with the Oilers. However, Giguere's perspective highlights the symbolic significance of such moments and the message they send to fans and young players.

Ultimately, while McDavid's choice reflects the intensity of the moment, Giguere's comments serve as a reminder of the broader responsibilities and traditions in hockey. Respecting the game's customs and showing sportsmanship, even in difficult times, are values that resonate deeply within the hockey community.
