New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba has been at the center of trade rumors recently as General Manager Chris Drury attempts to clear cap space. During the draft, discussions intensified about a potential move, with Trouba's home state team, the Detroit Red Wings, emerging as a possible destination.
Despite the talks, no deal was finalized, and as of July 12th, Trouba remains with the New York Rangers. Reports from early last week suggested a summer trade for Trouba was unlikely due to personal reasons. His wife is currently completing her residency at a New York hospital, and the couple has a six-month-old child, making it difficult for him to relocate.
Stefen Rosner, an NHL.com beat reporter, revealed that Trouba added the Detroit Red Wings to his no-trade list upon learning that the Rangers intended to trade him there.
Given this development, a trade involving Trouba appears to be off the table, at least until next July. This situation leaves Chris Drury needing to find alternative ways to clear cap space. Despite moving Barclay Goodrow's full cap hit off the books with his waiver claim last month, the Rangers still face financial constraints.
Potential trade options to clear cap space include Filip Chytil, with a $4.4375 million AAV, and K'Andre Miller, with a $3.872 million AAV. Both players could bring a decent return for the Rangers while helping to alleviate their cap issues.
As the offseason progresses, it will be interesting to see how Drury navigates these challenges to optimize the Rangers' roster for the upcoming season.
