The Pittsburgh Penguins have sold off some veterans this season, but now Kyle Dubas' plan appears to be building around their superstar captain as they look to put a contender around Sidney Crosby one more time.

This season, the Pittsburgh Penguins have moved Lars Eller, Drew O'Connor and Marcus Pettersson, and with the team getting back some major draft capital, it appears that their direction has become clear after months of speculation from analysts and the Pens fan base.
They may not be going into a full on rebuild however, as The Athletic have now detailed the plans of General Manager Kyle Dubas, noting that he's likely to continue this rebuild around Sidney Crosby, with the goal of putting a contender alongside their captain still.

This comes after speculation that the team could be open to moving No. 87 or they may simply look to do a rebuild that may take a few years, and with the team heading into the summer full of draft capital, that could mean they look to be aggressive in the summer.
Right now, the Penguins are predicted to have around $19 million in salary cap space in the summer if nothing changes, and with four first round picks as well as a further 11 between round two and three over the next three years, they've got plenty of assets to work with.
With some talented players set to hit free agency and the trade market over the next 12 months, if Dubas can play his cards right there is certainly some potential to turn things around, and if Crosby can keep playing at a high level, this is a team that could be a dark horse in 2025/26 if things are done right.
