Rookie general manager Steve Staios learned an important lesson after a terrible bluff cost him in the Jakob Chychrun trade.

The Ottawa Senators hired Steve Staios as their general manager eight months ago, and he has been on a steep learning curve ever since. Despite his efforts to make the team relevant and respected, Staios may have made a misstep in the Jacob Chychrun trade with the Washington Capitals, according to reports.

TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger suggested that Staios may have had the opportunity to acquire a first and second-round pick for Chychrun but instead settled for a third-round pick and Nick Jensen. While it's possible Staios was trying to negotiate a better deal, it's unclear what purpose lying about the trade would serve.

"The Chychrun trade was interesting because I know Steve Staios was telling other managers in Vegas at the draft that he had a 1st and a 2nd but was looking for more for Jakob Chychrun. Ahhh, sounds doubtful that he had a 1st and a 2nd."

Fans and insiders are giving Staios the benefit of the doubt, but the team's struggles have left everyone eager for success. It's unlikely the truth will come out, but if the reports are accurate, Staios needs to improve his negotiation skills and work smarter in the future. The Senators have been struggling for a long time, and everyone is eager for the team to become relevant again.
