Yesterday, details about Evgeny Kuznetsov's contract in Russia began circulating, and today we have confirmation of his new team in the KHL. Kuznetsov has officially signed a four-year deal with SKA St. Petersburg, bringing him back to his homeland where he grew up and developed his hockey skills.
Kuznetsov, a seasoned veteran with 743 NHL games under his belt, played for the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes. Recently, he was cleared to continue his NHL career after participating in the Player Assistance Program. However, he requested a release from his contract with the Hurricanes, opting to return to Russia instead.
Kuznetsov's performance in North America has waned over the past couple of years, and returning to Russia might provide the fresh start he needs. During his time in the NHL, he achieved significant milestones, including winning a Stanley Cup and playing alongside his compatriot Alexander Ovechkin for most of his career.
Whether it was a sense of homesickness or the desire for a different pace of life, Kuznetsov's decision to return home is a personal one. It seems likely that unless he represents Russia in international competitionsassuming they are allowed to participatewe may have seen the last of Kuznetsov in North America for the foreseeable future.
