Evgeny Kuznetsov has officially closed the chapter on his NHL career, opting to return to his homeland to play for SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL. The 32-year-old forward, whose contract with the Carolina Hurricanes was recently terminated, has signed a four-year deal that marks his return to Russian hockey for the first time since 2014.
After the announcement of his contract with SKA St. Petersburg, Kuznetsov sat down with Russian media outlet Match.ru to discuss his decision to leave North America and return to the KHL. Kuznetsov emphasized that the move was a thoughtful one, made in consultation with his family.
Kuznetsov's career in the NHL began in March 2014 when he signed an entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals. Over the course of 11 seasons with the Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes, Kuznetsov played 743 games, amassing 575 points (173 goals, 402 assists) and contributing significantly to the Capitals' 2018 Stanley Cup victory with 73 points in 97 playoff games.
Despite his success in North America, Kuznetsov acknowledged that the time was right for him to return to Russia. He revealed that his hometown team, Traktor Chelyabinsk, had also offered him a contract, but he felt that SKA St. Petersburg was a better fit at this stage of his career.
Kuznetsov's move to SKA St. Petersburg not only marks a significant transition in his career but also highlights his desire to reconnect with his roots and embrace a new chapter in his life. As he prepares to don the SKA jersey, Kuznetsov brings a wealth of experience and skill to the KHL, where he aims to continue his hockey journey closer to home.
The decision to leave the NHL was not made lightly, but Kuznetsov believes that it is the right move for him and his family at this time. With the support of his loved ones, he is ready to embark on this new adventure in St. Petersburg, where he hopes to make a lasting impact both on and off the ice.
