Calgary Flames finally going to get a brand new arena
Calgary Flames' New Arena Construction to Begin Monday, Replacing Aging Saddledome
The Calgary Flames have long awaited a new home, as their current arena, the Scotiabank Saddledome, built in 1983, stands as the second-oldest in the NHL. Only New York's Madison Square Garden outdates it. After extensive negotiations between the city and the franchise, an agreement was reached in late April 2023 to build a new arena.
Sportsnet's Eric Francis reported that the City of Calgary and the Province of Alberta will officially commence construction of the $926 million Event Centre with a sod-turning event on Monday. This new Event Centre will feature an 18,000-seat arena that will become the Flames' new home.
"As a Calgarian I'm thrilled to report that on Monday the Flames, city and province will officially start the building of the $926 million Event Centre with a sod turning event.
I'm told design renderings will also be unveiled Monday, almost nine years after Ken King unveiled the team's first vision of a new NHL arena.
The 18,000-seat home of the Flames will also include a community rink, a parkade and an indoor and outdoor event plaza.
It will be built two blocks north of the Saddledome, where the massive Cowboys tent is currently being dismantled.
The hope is that construction will be completed in time for the 2027-28 season."
The new building will mark the fourth home for the Flames franchise. Initially established in Atlanta in 1972, the team played at the downtown Omni Coliseum before financial challenges led to their relocation to Calgary in 1980.
This development brings a much-needed update for the Flames, promising modern facilities and enhanced experiences for fans and the community. The new arena's completion is aimed for the 2027-28 season, ushering in a new era for Calgary's beloved hockey team.
