Max Comtois, once a key piece of the Anaheim Ducks' rebuilding plans, is heading overseas to continue his hockey career. After being drafted in the second round by the Ducks in 2017, expectations were high for the Quebec native. However, things didn't pan out as planned, and now Comtois has signed a one-year deal with Dynamo Moscow of the KHL.
Dynamo Moscow officially announced Comtois' signing on their social media platform.
Comtois spent five seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, leading the team in points during the 2020-21 season. Despite this peak, the Ducks decided not to extend a qualifying offer to him in 2023, making him a free agent. Subsequently, Comtois signed a one-year contract with the AHL's Chicago Wolves, the affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes. Though he had a strong season in the AHL with 19 goals and 44 points in 65 games, he only played one game in the NHL with the Hurricanes.
Comtois' career highlights include captaining Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2018 World Junior Championship and winning gold again with Canada at the World Championship in 2021. Despite his successes, his NHL career did not develop as expected, leading to this new opportunity in the KHL.
As Comtois embarks on this new chapter with Dynamo Moscow, it will be interesting to see if he can rediscover his form and become a significant contributor in the KHL. The move also underscores the dynamic nature of professional sports careers and the importance of adaptability for athletes at all levels.
