Brett Sutter Announces Retirement After 17 Seasons in Professional Hockey

Brett Sutter has officially announced his retirement from professional hockey after an impressive 17-season career. Known for his dedication and leadership, Sutter played 60 NHL games and over 1,090 AHL games, ranking him fourth all-time in the American Hockey League.

Sutter, the son of former NHL coach Darryl Sutter, has been a key figure for the Calgary Wranglers, the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, where he served as captain for the past two seasons. He will now transition to a new role within the organization as an assistant coach.

«Saying goodbye to playing isn't easy. The game has treated my family and I so well for so long, but the opportunity to stay within the organization that my family loves, makes this transition easier,"
Sutter said.

At 37, Sutter was originally selected by the Flames in the sixth round, 179th overall, during the 2005 NHL Draft. His father, Darryl Sutter, was the coach and GM of the Flames at the time and played a significant role in his selection.

The Sutter family has a deeply ingrained history with the NHL. The Sutter brothersBrent, Brian, Ron, Duane, Rich, and Darryleach played over 400 NHL games. This legacy continued with their sons, who have also made their mark in professional hockey.

With Brett Sutter's retirement, only one Sutter remains in pro hockey: 24-year-old Riley Sutter, son of Ron. Riley has recently won back-to-back Calder Cup trophies with the Hershey Bears, maintaining the family's presence in the sport.

Everyone at Hockey Unplugged wishes Brett Sutter all the best in his new role as a professional hockey coach, continuing his family's storied legacy in the sport.
