On a recent podcast, Girardi shared these gruesome photos of an injury he sustained while blocking a shot. The injury led to him ultimately getting an infection and nearly losing his foot.

After being stitched up Girardi continue to play the game and after being reviewed by trainers the stitches had worn off revealing just bone. This set Girardi on a long recovery plan that without the proper care likely would have caused him to have his foot amputated.
The fact that he was able to return from this injury is just a testament to how tough hockey players truly are.
