A significant development about Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs has been disclosed by an insider. Not all fans will be pleased. especially in light of the recent dominance of the rumor mill.

Since the Toronto Maple Leafs were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Boston Bruins, there have been rumors around the team and star Mitch Marner. Marner's tenure in the blue and white, though, doesn't appear to be coming to an end after all.

Not many anticipated that Marner and his representatives would not be compiling a no-trade list or planning to leave the Leafs before his contract expires, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

As I wrote a few weeks ago, the Marner camp, led by agent Darren Ferris isn't putting together a list of teams for a potential trade. The focus for Marner, who has a full no-move clause, is on honoring the remaining year of his contract and seeing where things go from there.

That also means I don't think there's an appetite to talk extension come July 1. The preference from the Marner camp is to start the season and see how things go. Perhaps there are talks on an extension eventually, but I don't believe there's a strong desire to get into them this summer.

Having said that, Marner and his camp don't appear to be interested in signing an extension, so it's possible he'll become a free agent in 2019.

We'll see how this plays out, but Marner might put the Maple Leafs in handcuffs.
