John Tavares' contract talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs get a massive update
John Tavares may no longer be the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs but that does not mean the team no longer values him as a player.
In fact, Tavares is up for a new contract and there has been a lot of talk around whether or not he would end up getting a new contract. Numerous reports have circulated about the contract talks and whether or not we could see something get done anytime soon.
On a recent episode of Insider Trading, TSN insider Pierre LeBrun gave the scoop on what is going down with Tavares. As he explained, the two sides are talking but there is no rush to get anything done. Both sides want Tavares to stay in Toronto, which is definitely an encouraging baseline.
"There have been contract talks. There's been back and forth between Tavares' camp and the Leafs' front office. I don't think anything is imminent, though I do hear the dialogue is supposed to pick up again.
There is a mutual desire between the team and John Tavares to get something done at some point. From the Leafs' perspective, it is something they want to get done, but I don't know if they're in a rush to do it."
Hopefully, this continues to go smoothly. Leafs fans were blessed by Tavares' presence a few years ago and we're sure they would love to keep that going. If they don't, then the Leafs championship window could find itself declining rapidly.
