This summer, the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Erik Karlsson with the aim of reclaiming contender status. However, as the trade deadline looms, signs suggest they might take on a seller's role.

Could star forward Jake Guentzel be on the trading block?

In the backdrop of the iconic Penguins trio Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris LetangJake Guentzel has quietly been a crucial part of the team for eight years, evolving into an NHL superstar in his own right.

At 29, Guentzel boasts an impressive track record with 454 points in just 488 games, including 40 in 35 games this season. Now, reports indicate that multiple contenders have their eyes set on him.

A steep price for the 29-year-old standout

As per TSN's Chris Johnston, several teams, with the Edmonton Oilers among the frontrunners, are interested in acquiring Guentzel. However, securing his services won't come easy or cheap.

Johnston notes that to land Guentzel, a team must be willing to part with a first-round pick and a high-level prospect. Given his injury history, this could pose a significant risk for potential suitors.

While the Penguins might still make a playoff push in the tight Metropolitan Division race, if not, trading Guentzel for valuable assets could provide an opportunity to strengthen the team around its core once again.
