The Philadelphia Flyers could be very active this month when the NHL buyout window opens. Daniel Briere is considering buying out Cam Atkinson and Cal Peterson.

The Philadelphia Flyers general manager, Danny Briere, stated in a recent interview with NHL.com that they are weighing all of their alternatives with regard to goaltender Cal Petersen and forward Cam Atkinson.

Buying out their contracts is one of those alternatives, and that could happen the day the Stanley Cup Final ends and the first buyout window opens.

"We're looking at every option," Briere said. "Because we're tight on [NHL salary] cap space, we're still looking at every possible option in that direction. Both Cam Atkinson and Cal Petersen want to prove that they can still play in the NHL. So we're evaluating all of that, but we haven't made a final decision yet."

According to CapFriendly, the Flyers are projected to have just over $503,000 in cap space available for the 202425 season. This will go up by over $6 million before the season begins in October after Ryan Ellis lands on long-term injured reserve.

The 35-year-old Atkinson is about to reach the last year of a contract worth $5.875 million on average annually. In the meantime, Cal Petersen, whose current contract has a $5 million cap hit, is scheduled to enter its final year in 20242025.

If Briere wishes to make a huge move in free agency beginning on July 1st, it will likely only be possible if they choose to buy out Atkinson or Petersen.
