It was a moment that had hockey fans laughing across the board, but it seems the higher-ups at the NHL didn't find it quite as amusing.

During Saturday night's game, Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella stole the spotlight with a standoff that quickly went viral on social media.

It all began when NHL referee Wes McCauley ejected Tortorella from the game, but the coach refused to leave the Flyers' bench as instructed.

Honestly, it's hard to blame Tortorella for his frustration. Not only was it a night dedicated to honoring the 2004 Stanley Cup-winning Tampa Bay Lightning, a team he once coached, but the ejection itself seemed a bit unnecessary.

Here's how Tortorella reacted:

Tortorella's response to McCauley spread like wildfire online, providing plenty of entertainment for hockey fans. However, it appears the NHL isn't finding the humor in the situation. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman hinted strongly that Tortorella might face disciplinary action for his behavior.

"We've all been laughing about this tonightwe'll see how things evolve tomorrow, but the NHL still has to weigh in. I don't think it found the refusal to leave the bench as humorous as social media did," said Friedman on Saturday.

We won't have to wait long to find out if Tortorella faces consequences for his actions.
