The Detroit Red Wings and general manager Steve Yzerman had their sights set high for the team this season. After enduring years of rebuilding, the Red Wings aimed to clinch a playoff spot, and they're still pushing for it.

However, it seems that head coach Derek Lalonde's future with the team could hinge on achieving that goal.

Currently, the Red Wings are just two points shy of securing the final Wild Card spot in the NHL Standings. With only eight games remaining, Detroit finds themselves in a tight race with four other teams vying for the same playoff position.

The Philadelphia Flyers currently hold the coveted spot, with the Red Wings, New York Islanders, and New Jersey Devils hot on their heels.

Rumors are swirling that a failure to make the playoffs could spell the end for Lalonde's tenure as head coach. According to Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now, the possibility of a coaching change has already been on the table.

As per Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now, "An NHL source is telling Hockey Now that the possibility of a coaching change is something that is being pondered by Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman." The Red Wings continue their free fll out of a playoff position and Yzerman's patience is running low. The source notes that former St. Louis Blues coach Craig Berube might be the leading candidate for the job.

Lalonde is midway through his 3-year contract with the Red Wings, boasting a record of 71-67-18 in 156 games. If the Red Wings opt for a change, Berube emerges as a potential candidate, offering a wealth of experiencea quality the team desperately needs.

Only time will reveal whether the Red Wings can secure a playoff berth and, if so, whether it will be sufficient to secure Lalonde's position as head coach.
