Patrik Laine's season with the Columbus Blue Jackets has taken a turn, with the Finnish forward deciding not to return to the ice before the end of the regular season, following his entry into the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program earlier this year.

The year started tough for Laine and the Blue Jackets, with the team not finding their footing. To add to the challenges, Laine suffered a clavicle fracture in December, sidelining him for six weeks. But the situation took a more serious turn when, just over a month later, it was announced that Laine would step away from the game indefinitely to enter the Player Assistance Program.

"The National Hockey League Players' Association and National Hockey League announced today that forward Patrik Laine of the Columbus Blue Jackets will be unavailable to his Club for an indefinite period while he receives care from the Player Assistance Program of the NHLPA and NHL.»

Now, reports confirm that Laine has no plans to lace up his skates again for the 2023-24 season. With the Blue Jackets not in contention for a playoff spot, this means his season has effectively ended.

"John Davidson told Aaron Portzline of The Athletic that «[Patrik Laine] won't be back this season."

While fans and teammates undoubtedly hoped to see Laine return to action, his well-being is paramount. It's reassuring to know he's making the best decision for himself with support from those around him. Here's to hoping we see Laine back in top form for the 2024-25 season.
