The Carolina Hurricanes faced off against the Colorado Avalanche tonight, and things took an unexpected turn at the end of the 1st period when the Avalanche scored twice in just seven seconds.

Avalanche capitalizes on goalie slip-up

The Hurricanes were leading 3-0 in the final minute of the 1st period when newcomer Zach Parise scored for the Avalanche, cutting Carolina's lead to two.

That goal was decent enough, but what happened next was a real shocker. Avalanche defenseman Sam Girard attempted to chip the puck in from the neutral zone, catching Kochetkov off guard as the puck sailed into the net.

With just seconds left in the 1st period, Kochetkov remained in goal. However, he was replaced by Antti Raanta at the start of the 2nd period. Adding insult to injury, the Avalanche managed just 8 shots on goal in the entire period, including Girard's unexpected chip shot.

"Antti Raanta leads the #Canes back out to the ice for the second period of play.

Pyotr Kochetkov is out after allowing two goals in the final 27 seconds of the first period, including the late gaffe.

His night will end with two goals against on eight shots."

It's a tough lesson for the young goalie, but one he won't soon forget.
