The Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins wrapped up a fiery first period in Game Six of their first-round playoff series, but it was Brad Marchand's actions that stole the spotlight. Caught on camera shoving an official, Marchand crossed a line well understood in the sport. Officials are off-limits, no matter the on-ice provocations.

Marchand, who is no stranger to controversy, surely knows better. Despite his reputation for pushing boundaries, the decision by the officials not to penalize him for this infraction is baffling. It sets a precarious standard where it seems Marchand can bend the rules with only a slim chance of facing consequences.

This incident could well have warranted a game misconduct under NHL rules, yet Marchand was allowed to continue playing, which is a stroke of incredible luck for him and a point of contention for those watching.

40.1 Game Misconduct Any player who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official, in any manner attempts to injure an official, physically demeans, or deliberately applies physical force to an official solely for the purpose of getting free of such an official during or immediately following an altercation shall receive a game misconduct penalty.

The inconsistency in enforcing rules about physical contact with officials needs to be addressed to maintain the integrity of the game.
