Gary Bettman and the NHL are reportedly gearing up to make a massive change to one of the sports' biggest nights and events.

Of course, we are talking about the NHL Awards. Overall, this event has been under scrutiny for quite some time. It is usually hosted by a comedian who is awful to watch and is downright not very funny. Moreover, the players take themselves so seriously that not a single joke ever lands.

According to Elliotte Friedman, the NHL has certainly been hearing those criticisms and is now looking to change course. As the Sportsnet insider reveals, the NHL wants to do away with the ceremony and instead, honor players during the first week of the playoffs.

" What the league is looking at in combination with the Players' Association, is what else can they do that's interesting, what else can they do that will make the awards special," Friedman said. "A couple of things have been thrown out. One of the ideas is doing it the way the NBA does it.

The NBA, during the first week of the playoffs, will honour the winners at their home arenas.

These are the kind of things that are being considered because it's not expected this year that there will be an awards show as we've seen it in the past."

Given the lack of interest in the event over the years, this is probably for the best. At the end of the day, the NHL Awards have always been kind of a bloated event anyway. They aren't entertaining and the players do not seem to enjoy them very much.
