Columbus Blue Jackets down to just two candidates for vacant coaching job
Columbus Blue Jackets Near Decision on Head Coach, Finalists Include Dean Evason and Jay Woodcroft
Earlier this summer, the Columbus Blue Jackets hired Don Waddell as their general manager, believing he was the best fit for the job. Now, as we move into the third week of July, reports indicate that the team is close to finalizing their search for a new head coach, with two finalists expected to meet with the Blue Jackets' brass, including Waddell, this week.
Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports that the two finalists for the position are likely former Minnesota Wild coach Dean Evason and former Edmonton Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft.
"Aaron Portzline of The Athletic is reporting that the two finalists which likely include former Minnesota Wild coach Dean Evason & former Edmonton Oilers bench boss Jay Woodcroft would be meeting with Blue Jackets brass including Waddell this week."
While the hiring process has been lengthy, Waddell has emphasized the importance of thoroughness in selecting the right candidate. Initially, Waddell had a list of twelve potential candidates, which included the aforementioned Evason and Woodcroft, as well as former Los Angeles Kings head coach Todd McLellan.
It is believed that discussions with the top three candidates included talks about salary structure and preferred assistant coaches. This is where negotiations with McLellan may have broken down, as the Kings still owe him $5.5 million.
As the search narrows down to Evason and Woodcroft, the Blue Jackets are keen to finalize their decision soon. Waddell aims to have the new head coach in place by the first week of August at the latest, as training camp is just a few weeks away. The thorough and deliberate process reflects the team's commitment to finding the best possible leader to guide the Blue Jackets into the future.
Both Evason and Woodcroft bring valuable experience and unique strengths to the table, and the decision will ultimately hinge on who Waddell and the Blue Jackets' management believe is the best fit for the team's goals and culture. As the announcement draws near, Blue Jackets fans eagerly await the decision that will shape the team's direction for the upcoming season and beyond.
