Hockey fans are notorious for making outlandish bets, and a Boston Bruins fan recently learned this the hard way with a wager involving his favorite Italian dish: the calzone.

For as long as anyone can remember, the Boston Bruins have had the Toronto Maple Leafs' number in Game 7 matchups. Despite the Maple Leafs' die-hard fans hoping for a different outcome, some fans take it a step further by making bold bets and sharing them on social media for all to see.
One Bruins fan, Rob Thibeault, did just that during Boston's first-round series against Toronto in this past season's NHL playoffs. When the Bruins appeared to be facing an uphill battle, Rob posted on his X account (formerly Twitter) a bold proclamation: he would give up calzones for three months if the Bruins won Game 7 against the Maple Leafs.
Everyone knows how that series ended, with the Bruins defeating the Maple Leafs in Game 7. As a result, Rob found himself in the unenviable position of having to forego calzones from early May until early August 2024.

Why people make such ridiculous wagers is a mystery to many. Perhaps Rob believed the Bruins were unlikely to pull off the win, making the bet a safe one. Or maybe he saw it as an opportunity to cut back on calzones, knowing they were his weakness. The real reason is anyone's guess.
What is certain is that Rob has now returned to enjoying the calzones he so bravely sacrificed in his wager. His experience serves as a cautionary tale: never bet for or against your favorite team unless you're sure of the outcome, as it could backfire spectacularly.
In the end, Rob's bet illustrates the passionate and sometimes irrational lengths hockey fans will go to support their teams, adding a humorous and relatable story to the tapestry of NHL fandom. So, whether you're a fan of the Bruins, the Maple Leafs, or any other team, take Rob's advice: think twice before making that next big bet, especially if it involves your favorite food.
