Before the NHL season kicked off, the hockey community was taken aback by the news of Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto being handed a 41-game suspension. The suspension was linked to a violation of the NHL's gambling policy, but the details remained undisclosed.
At the time of the suspension, Pinto wasn't under contract with the Senators, categorized as a restricted free agent holdout. With no deal in place, Pinto was in New York when the news broke. Today, Pinto was spotted back in Ottawa at the Canadian Tire Centre.
His unexpected presence raised eyebrows, considering his current ineligibility and lack of a contract. Interim Head Coach Jacques Martin addressed the situation this morning.
Despite not having a contract, the NHL permitted Pinto to serve his suspension, citing it as an off-ice, non-hockey-related situation. However, this creates a contradiction since Pinto is now back with the team 10 games earlier than expected. This grants him access to team meetings, facilities, and coaches, despite being suspended and without a contract.
This incident adds to the list of poorly managed situations that reflect negatively on Gary Bettman and the NHL.
