The preseason is ongoing and it has certainly been interesting to watch this squad try to navigate everything that is going on right now. However, it would appear as though Matthews has been nursing somewhat of an upper-body injury. This is something that we reported on earlier in the week, and there is no doubt that some fans have been concerned for his well-being.
Today, it was revealed that the Leafs would be sitting Matthews during their preseason tilt against the Montreal Canadiens. Of course, this may elicit some concern in some sections of the fanbase. However, they should breathe easy knowing that this is probably just for rest and 100 percent certainty in his health.
We say that because Matthews was back at practice today. Needless to say, the injury cannot be that bad if he is on the ice. While it may take him a few days to feel 100 percent again, this is still a great sign that things are not dire or particularly serious. It certainly could have been a whole lot worse.
Now, Matthews and the Leafs can focus on the regular season, where fans want to see some playoff success. While Matthews can score as many goals as he wants, if the team does not get it done come playoff time, none of it matters.
