Former NHL goalie shockingly comes out of retirement
Thomas Greiss is a 14-year NHL veteran who played for numerous teams throughout his career including the New York Islanders, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, among many others.
Previously, Greiss had retired from the game of hockey. However, after injuries to goaltenders Jussi Olkinuora and Cody Brenner, Lowen Frankfurt of the DEL were in a bind. As a result, they reached out to Greiss asking if he would come out of retirement for a few games. Greiss agreed, and now, he is bad in the DEL after a long hiatus.
Daniel Heinrizi, the sporting director for Lowen Frankfurt, spoke about all of this on the team's website. Beware, though, these quotes are translated from German.
"We made contact with Thomas yesterday, Tuesday, and he immediately agreed to support us in this challenging situation. He will be with us for the time when Cody and Jussi are not available, and will bring his many years of experience and qualities as a top goalkeeper. In the current situation, this is the ideal solution for us, as he is not entitled to a contract until the end of the season. This was always an understandable request with the other personnel options that were available to us at short notice. We are pleased that Thomas is coming to us tomorrow and will be available for the next game weekend," Heinrizi said.
Greiss spoke on his new gig, noting that he is excited to help the team out over this upcoming stretch. Additionally, he seems excited about reuniting with some of his friends who have been in the league for quite some time.
"I would like to thank the Lions that everything worked out so quickly and I hope I can be of help to the team for the few games. I am looking forward to seeing some old friends again and to being able to experience the great atmosphere in the German ice rinks again," Greiss said.
