Former NHL player Alex Steen lands first NHL General Manager job
According to the St. Louis Blues' management succession plan, Doug Armstrong will leave his post as general manager in 2026.
Doug Armstrong will remain the team's President of Hockey Operations through the 2028–2029 season, according to a contract extension he inked with the Blues, which was announced during a press conference on Thursday.
But after the 2025–2026 season, Armstrong will step down as the team's general manager, with veteran forward Alexander Steen taking over. Steen will work as Doug Armstrong's special assistant for the next two seasons to see what it's like to be a general manager in the National Hockey League.
"The longest-tenured and winningest general manager in Blues history, Armstrong has signed a three-year contract extension to continue leading the club as president of hockey operations through the 2028-29 season. The club has also named Alexander Steen as special assistant to the general manager through the 2025-26 season, after which he will be appointed as the 12th general manager in franchise history." The Blues said.
With the Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues in 1,018 NHL games, Steen, 40, finished with 622 points (245 goals, 377 assists) and 454 penalty minutes. Steen was a member of the Blues when he won the Stanley Cup in 2019.
After missing the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time since 2009-10 and 2010-11, the Blues will look to return to the big dance next spring and will have some big decisions to make regarding their roster this summer.
