Martin Necas Reportedly Rejected Contract Extension with Atlantic Division Team Amid Trade Rumors

Martin Necas has been the subject of numerous trade rumors over the past few months, with many expecting the Carolina Hurricanes forward to be moved before the start of the 2024-25 season. Despite significant interest from various teams, it appears that Necas will remain with the Hurricanes for now.

On Monday, Necas and the Carolina Hurricanes agreed to terms on a two-year contract worth $6.5 million per season. While this deal doesn't eliminate the possibility of a future trade, it makes it more likely that Necas will be on the Hurricanes' roster when the season begins in October.

Following the announcement of Necas' contract extension, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff revealed that the Czech forward had reportedly turned down an extension as part of a now-failed trade with the Buffalo Sabres. The specifics of what the Sabres would have sent back to the Hurricanes in the proposed trade remain unclear.

"The Buffalo Sabres reportedly had an offer on the table for Martin Necas that may have been accepted, but Necas informed the Sabres he wasn't interested in re-signing in Buffalo. Per, Frank Seravalli." TheMug said.

Acquiring a forward of Necas' caliber could have been a significant boost for the Sabres, who are looking to add scoring depth to their lineup. However, Necas' decision to reject the extension isn't entirely surprising. The Sabres face a challenging season in the Atlantic Division, and Necas likely prefers to stay with a team that has a stronger chance of making a deep playoff run.

Necas, a native of Nove Mesto na Morave, Czechia, played in 77 games during the 2023-24 regular season, tallying 53 points (24 goals, 29 assists), 42 penalty minutes, and a minus-nine rating. He also contributed nine points (four goals, five assists) in 11 playoff games.

The Hurricanes are likely pleased to have secured Necas for the next two years. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see if trade discussions resurface, especially as the trade deadline approaches, depending on the Hurricanes' performance.

The Carolina Hurricanes are probably very happy they were able to lock up Martin Necas on a two-year contract. We'll have to wait and see how the season unfolds in Carolina and if trade rumours start to swirl once again towards the deadline, depending on the Hurricanes' position in the standings.
