Raanta, a former Cup-winning goalie with the Chicago Blackhawks, recently cleared waivers after facing challenges with a .854 SV%, one of the lowest among goalies with at least five games played this season. His goals saved above expected stood at -9.4.
The veteran goalie, with 267 NHL games and 11 seasons of experience, accepted an assignment to AHL Chicago. In his two starts in the minors, Raanta allowed three goals in each game, posting a .875 SV%. The Wolves secured three out of a possible four points in games with Raanta in goal.
It's uncertain whether Raanta's recall is permanent or for roster management reasons. Recalls are allowed during the NHL's holiday roster freeze, and Perets can be sent down as long as he was informed of the transaction by the end of the previous day.
If the Hurricanes choose to send Raanta back to the AHL Chicago Wolves soon, they can do so without hassle. Since he passed through waivers unclaimed, he can remain on the Hurricanes' roster for up to 30 days or play ten games, whichever comes first, before needing waivers to head back to the minors.
Perets, who didn't see action for the Hurricanes since his recall last weekend, backed up Pyotr Kochetkov in four contests. The 23-year-old, in his first professional season, boasts a .916 SV%, one shutout, and a 5-5-1 record in 11 games with Norfolk this season.
