Wayne Simmonds Signs One Last NHL Contract With His Former Team
Wayne Simmonds stands out as one of the top power forwards in the last two decades. With his strong, fluid skating style, he brought a physical edge to every game, keeping his opponents on their toes.
Unfortunately, injuries took a toll on the latter part of his journey after reaching the milestone of 1000 games played.
Simmonds bid farewell to the ice on April 8th, 2023, donning the Toronto Maple Leafs jersey against the Montreal Canadiens. Today, news broke that he will sign one last NHL contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, marking his official retirement from the league as part of the Flyers organization.
Reflecting on his career, Simmonds shared,
«It's hard to describe my emotions on a day like this, but one of my very first thoughts as I look back is my life in Philadelphia and playing for the Flyers. Taking the ice in a Flyers sweater is a special feeling and it's one that I'm truly proud of. The history of this franchise and standard of being a Flyer that was set is unique and one that I hold in the highest regard. Perhaps the biggest reason for that is the way the fans embrace this team. It was a thrill to play for you all these years, and you mean so much to me. I'd like to thank Dan Hilferty, Keith Jones and Danny Briere for making this a special day and the fans for all their support throughout the years for me and my family.»
Simmonds wraps up his remarkable career with 1037 games played, tallying 263 goals and 263 assists for a total of 526 points. Throughout his 15-year journey, he graced the rosters of Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Nashville, New Jersey, Buffalo, and Toronto.
