The New York Rangers, whose captain Jacob Trouba is up for trade, are trying to free up some budget space. The 30-year-old defenseman's name has been thrown around the league by general manager Chris Drury, and it looks like things are heating up.
Drury is reportedly working on a deal that would transfer the physical defense to the Red Wings; Trouba would accept the trade having participated for the Wolverines in 2012–2013 as a freshman. For Trouba, who is from Rochester, Michigan, it will be a homecoming.
On Monday, Trouba's contract will go from having a complete no-movement clause to a 15-team no-trade list. According to reports, Trouba's team has already been asked to provide the no-trade list by New York.
Braden Schneider and Ryan Lindgren, two of the Rangers' younger, restricted free agents, are in need of new deals. During the postseason, Trouba occasionally found himself in the third pairing behind Schneider. Schneider's ice time increased from 15:54 to 17:32 during the playoffs, while Trouba's decreased from 21:15 during the regular season to 20:59.
