Alex Ovechkin is now single digits away from beating the NHL goal record, and Penguins captain Sidney Crosby opened up with his thoughts on it all.

Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin have been matched in hockey debates since their first year in the NHL in 2005-06.
Their teams, the Washington Capitals, and the Pittsburgh Penguins, have battled in hundreds of classic games, and their rivalry remains one of the league's greatest.
And now, with Ovechkin on the verge of breaking Wayne Gretzky's record for goals, even Crosby can't help but admire the moment. Ovechkin's quest has overshadowed the fact that Washington sits atop the standings.
The 39-year-old missed significant time during the season when he suffered a serious leg injury, leading people to wonder whether he would break Gretzky's record.

Ovechkin scored goal 886 last night

But Ovechkin piled on the stats since he returned and recently, scoring during a 4-2 win over Seattle and bringing his tally to 886 goals, nine from history.
With the target in mind, it's no longer a question of if but when he will surpass 894. After Pittsburgh's 3-1 win over Minnesota, during which Crosby had two goals, he acknowledged Ovechkin's remarkable ride.
"I mean, it's amazing what he's doing, at his age. Just, nonetheless, to score that much, no matter how old you are, but especially at his age." Crosby said postgame, via NHL on TNT. "The excitement around it, throughout the league and fans, everyone's got a close eye on it. It will be amazing when it happens. I think we have them last game of the season, but I'm sure at the clip he's going he'll probably end up getting it before that."
Since fans are living history in the moment, Ovechkin is putting more depth into his legacy. The goal against Seattle was also his 1,600th career point. He'll get a chance to edge closer to the record when the Capitals host the Anaheim Ducks on March 11.
