Today, the New York Islanders did the unthinkable as they ended up waiving forward Pierre Engvall just one year after signing him to a seven-year contract.

In the first year of his deal, Engvall suffered injuries that hampered him. However, he was able to still play in 74 games. Unfortunately, his production in those games was less than satisfactory. He scored just 10 goals and 18 assists last season, for a total of 28 points. This simply was not good enough and he was waived.
This is not necessarily the end of the road for Engvall. If he clears Waivers, he will go down to the AHL. From there, he can work his way back into the Islanders lineup. Having said that, Islanders General Manager Lou Lamoriello was brutally honest about Engvall and his play from last season.
"He basically lost the job at this point."
Being placed on waivers is always a wake-up call, regardless of your standing around the league. It is a particularly bad look for Engvall who had previously been given a $21 million deal. Needless to say, he will have to work hard to gain the trust back of the organization. Only time will tell how things all shake out.
