With the New Jersey Devils eyeing a playoff spot, GM Tom Fitzgerald sees a chance to make some strategic cap moves to boost the team.

Pierre LeBrun from TSN shares a less-than-ideal update on the injury status of Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton, but there's a silver lining in terms of the team's budget.

"They don't have a firm timeline, but my understanding is he's probably out until the playoffs, until perhaps late April, early May. The flip side to that, they have a $9M cap hit to play with."

Fitzgerald not only has $9 million in his pocket but also a well-timed return window for Hamilton. With this financial flexibility, Fitzgerald could potentially bring in a couple of players and still have them, along with Hamilton, contributing in the more relaxed playoff cap environment.

"They've already been doing their due diligence on the D market, but they can also potentially add a goalie, they can add a couple of players that can help that roster with that $9M."

Hamilton suffered a pectoral muscle tear in a game against the New York Islanders at the end of November. Despite being just outside a playoff spot, there's ample time for New Jersey to make a push.
