Sean Monahan played numerous years with Johnny Gaudreau on the Calgary Flames, and this season, he was set to reunite with Gaudreau on the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Unfortunately, that will no longer be happening as Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were killed on Thursday night by a drunk driver. It was an absolutely horrific tragedy that has left the Gaudreau family and the hockey world completely devastated.
Many fans are thinking of Monahan today because of the comments he made just days ago on the What Chaos! show. During the episode, he spoke about his love for Gaudreau as a friend and how he couldn't wait to raise his kids alongside Gaudreau's. Essentially, he wanted the kids to be best friends. While that is still possible, Johnny Gaudreau will no longer be around to see it through. In retrospect, these remarks are absolutely devastating.
The man responsible for Gaudreau's death is named Sean Higgins, and he faces 20 years in prison over counts of death by auto and driving under the influence. For now, it remains to be seen whether or not he will be convicted and hit with a lengthy sentence. For now, hockey fans are hoping that justice is brought swiftly and quickly.
Our heart goes out to players like Monahan who have lost a teammate and a best friend. We also extend our condolences to the entire Gaudreau family. We hope they are able to get the support and care they need during this time.
Do you believe that the Flames and Blue Jackets should retire Gaudreau's jersey number for a few years? Let us know in the poll down below and stay tuned to Hockey Unplugged for the latest news and updates from around the hockey world.
