Maple Leafs Star Auston Matthews Addresses His Unusual Dry Spell
Auston Matthews, the Toronto Maple Leafs goal-scoring phenom, has hit an unusual dry spell this season, and he recently spoke about the challenge.
Matthews Discusses His Recent Scoring Drought
Despite racking up an impressive 54 goals already this season, Matthews finds himself in a bit of a slump, having scored just once in his last five outings.
At one point, the star forward was on track to surpass 80 goals, but his current pace has adjusted to 69, which would still top the NHL's charts for the first time in over a decade. Matthews shared his thoughts on this recent hiccup.
"I mean, stuff like that happens sometimes," he said. "The puck's not just going to go in all the time. I thought there were some good things. Obviously, I want to produce. I want to help the team and do my part."
Even with this recent dip in goal production, Matthews has consistently proven to be one of the league's elite scorers for several seasons. His coach remains unfazed by the current drought.
"He had at least two, maybe three, but certainly two, fairly clean chances where he was basically in alone on the goalie in Boston and those didn't fall for him," Matthews said. "Obviously, things have fallen a lot for him this season and they will again. Somewhat of a historic type of pace that he was on is historic for a reason, because it's difficult to maintain."
Given Matthews' track record, it wouldn't be surprising to see him net 10 goals in a short span, as he's demonstrated multiple times this season. Fans and teammates alike are eagerly waiting for his imminent rebound.
