The Colorado Avalanche are reportedly on the verge of securing a long-term contract extension for Finnish forward Mikko Rantanen. According to Jesse Montano of Guerilla Sports, the Avalanche and Rantanen are nearing an agreement on a deal that could span seven or eight years.
Rantanen, 27, became eligible for a contract extension with the Avalanche as of July 1st and has one year remaining on his current deal, which carries a cap hit of $9.25 million. Given his impressive development and performance over the past few seasons, it's anticipated that his new contract could exceed $11 million per year.
The Nousiainen, Finland native has been a pivotal player for the Avalanche, recording his second consecutive season with 100 or more points in 2023-24. Rantanen posted 104 points (42 goals, 62 assists) in 80 games, along with 50 penalty minutes and a plus-19 rating. His playoff performance was equally stellar, adding 14 points in ten games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
As the negotiations continue, the Colorado Avalanche are aiming to solidify their core by securing Rantanen for the long term. This move aligns with their strategy to build a team capable of capturing another Stanley Cup during the era of Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar.
With the anticipated extension, the Avalanche are poised to maintain their competitive edge and focus on achieving their championship aspirations in the upcoming seasons. The official announcement is expected soon, marking a significant milestone for both Rantanen and the Colorado Avalanche.
