Former Capitals enforcer Stephen Peat dead at 44
Sad news is coming out of the NHL today as NHL alumni confirmed the passing of former Washington Capitals enforcer Stephen Peat following injuries he sustained in an accident.
The forward was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks back in 1998 and eventually got traded to the Capitals where he played a total of 130 games. He was a fan-favorite in the city thanks to his grit. He finished his career with eight goals and two assists.
"The NHL Alumni Association is heartbroken to learn that Stephen Peat has passed away from his injuries after a tragic accident just over two weeks ago. He was only 44 years old.
In the wake of this tragic accident, Stephen will be helping to save numerous lives through organ donation.
We send our deepest condolences to Stephen's family, friends, and former teammates during this difficult time."
Following his time in the NHL, Peat struggled as he was accused of setting his father's home on fire. He also struggled with bouts of homelessness. It just goes to show that NHL players go through tough struggles just like the rest of us, and they deserve understanding and compassion.
Our heart goes out to Peat's family and the entire hockey community during this very difficult time. RIP Stephen Peat.
